Navy Federal Credit Union • June 2023 - March 2024 • UX Designer

Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) asked us to design and develop an API Portal that provides information, documentation, and access to their APIs for internal and external developers. Current state lacked organization and had no visual design; it was limited only to internal users using their VPN.

I worked on this project end-to-end:

  • researching

  • wire framing & designing high fidelity screens

  • prototyping

  • creative QA

Research

I conducted research on banking API portals and other best-in-class API documentation to analyze patterns and document information.

With this information and along with stakeholders, we created a list of three users and a sitemap that detailed the pages or features that aligned with each level of security.

Challenges + Future

One of the biggest challenges on this project was the limited access to actual users of the current system. Without the ability to interview or observe internal users directly, it was difficult to fully understand existing workflows or pain points. In some cases, we only had access to screenshots from Zoom screen shares, which made thorough research and testing a real constraint.

To work around this, we leaned on developers within our own team and tapped friends in similar roles to gather insights and validate our designs. While not ideal, these workarounds helped us stay user-focused with the resources we had.

Production’s still ongoing, so the designs haven’t made it out into the world just yet. It’s a little too early to know what kind of impact they’ll have, but I’m excited to see how things land once the site is live and people start using it.

2025 by me :)
